プロローグ / Prologue

「あ、知ってる」
「乗ったことある」
箱根海賊船の知名度の高さを感じる。2024年に60周年を迎えると知った。自身が生まれる前からあったことに驚く。若いカップルや子ども連れの他に、昔を懐かしむかのようにデッキで景色を眺め、スマートフォンで写真を撮っている老夫婦。「子どものころ親に連れられて乗ったことがあるよ。」と懐かしそうに話されるのを聞いていると、海賊船はこれまでに多くの人を楽しませてきたんだと感じさせられる。

I feel like the Pirate Ships in Hakone are very well known, and I learned that the tourist attraction will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2024. I was surprised to learn that it has been around since before I was born. In addition to young couples and children, an elderly couple were on deck looking at the scenery and taking photos. I heard them say nostalgically “My parents used to take me on this ride when I was a kid.” It makes you realise that these pirate ships have entertained a lot of people.

エピローグ / Epilogue

きっかけはこの1 枚。
写真展をやろうと決めた。ほとんどの季節で日が暮れる前に運航を終える海賊船。薄暗い時間帯だとどんな感じなのか、一番早く日が沈む11 月末の雨の日の夕方に目にしたのは、まるで物語に出てくる海賊船。写真展で発表してみようと、箱根に通うきっかけとなった1 枚である。富士山や箱根神社の水中鳥居など魅力ある撮影スポットを始め、鉄道を撮影してきた経験から、四季折々の季節感、時間帯、気象条件で、いろいろな光景をねらえるだろうという発想でスタートした。何度か足を運んでいるうちに、富士山はもちろん、海や川とは違う、美しく輝く湖面への映り込み、霧が立ち上がる気嵐など、湖ならではの自然現象による美しさにも気づかされる。箱根へ旅行の際には芦ノ湖まで足を運び、わくわくする乗り物「海賊船」で、湖上から見える箱根の景観を味わっていただきたい。

It all started with this one photograph.
I decided to do a photo exhibition. In most seasons, the pirate ships fi nish their operations before sunset. I wondered what they would be like in the dim light of dusk. What I saw on a rainy evening at the end of November, when the sun set the earliest, was like a pirate ship from a story. It was one of the images that inspired me to go to Hakone to try and present it in a photo exhibition. I have experience photographing scenic spots such as Mount Fuji and the underwater torii gate of Hakone Shrine, as well as photographing railways. This led me to the idea that I could capture a variety of scenes depending on the season, time of day and weather conditions. After visiting several times, I became aware of the beauty of the natural phenomena unique to lakes, such as the refl ections on the shining lake surface and the misty storms, which are different from those of the sea. Not to mention the view of Mount Fuji. When you travel to Hakone, visit Lake Ashinoko and enjoy the view of Hakone from the lake on a pirate ship, an exciting ride.
